“When Hitler attacked the Jews
I was not a Jew, therefore I was not concerned.
And when Hitler attacked the Catholics,
I was not a Catholic, and therefore, I was not concerned.
And when Hitler attacked the unions and the industrialists,
I was not a member of the unions and I was not concerned.
Then Hitler attacked me and the Protestant church —
and there was nobody left to be concerned.”
— Pastor Martin Niemoller
Enough said? Join me in taking the Ubuntu Pledge.
I initiate my personal Ubuntu Pledge. I will donate $______ every time I utter, write or type a racist, sexist, homophobic, jingoistic, misogynistic or similarly hateful and demeaning statement, comment, joke, etc. Further, the same penalty shall be imposed when these types of statements, comments, jokes, etc. are expressed in my presence and I refuse to acknowledge and confront them. The donation will be made to an entity that fosters respect for and advocates the rights of the negatively impacted group.
It is my intent that this step toward behavior change will increase my understanding and awareness of the depth and persistence of retrograde ideologies and practices. I hope this practice results in unity between my thoughts and deeds.
